Our main work focuses on walking challenges to football clubs that have a gambling relationship or partnership. All of our walks fundraise for Gambling with Lives. We have walked hundreds of miles and raised thousands for the charity which was set up by bereaved families of young men who took their own life as a direct result of their gambling addiction. Our walks aren't just about fundraising. We take the message across the country that the current level of gambling advertisement in football is dangerous, causes addiction and that clubs should review this relationship urgently.
Our signed letter to Downing Street was supported by a group of cross-party MPs who will be crucial in the much needed review of the Gambling Act.
Whilst gambling sponsorship and advertisement exists in football, we believe it's imperative clubs do as much as possible to support and protect those affected by gambling related harm.
The Big Step forms working partnerships with clubs across the country in order to raise awareness of addiction, promote practical tools such as Gamban and signposts towards NHS treatment. In April 2020 we launched such a partnership with Tranmere Rovers.
To further spread the message of our cause, members of The Big Step are regularly called upon to provide press quotes and appear on media broadcasts.
Having a media presence and platform enables us to inform as many people as possible about the dangers of gambling addiction and to give further weight to our cause within football. The Big Step is ultimately an awareness raising project, ensuring that more and more people understand how gambling can turn into addiction and even suicide.
We run awareness days at football clubs, so far at Derby County and Huddersfield Town with more to follow including days at Swansea City and Luton Town.
The days offer a chance to engage with fans who may require gambling support but provides an opportunity to inform people of the damage of gambling exposure to young fans.
Members of The Big Step can use their lived experience of gambling harm to educate, train and inform about gambling related harm and it's cause. We can provide this in school, sport, community or workplace settings.
We don't talk about 'responsible gambling' or 'staying in control'. Instead, we use our stories to warn of the addictive nature of certain products, the prevalence of gambling advertisement and how to stop gambling.
